Azure Active Directory (Azure AD) is Microsoft’s enterprise cloud-based identity and access management (IAM) solution. The Azure AD enterprise identity service provides single sign-on and multi-factor authentication to help protect your users from 99.9 percent of cybersecurity attacks. Azure AD is the backbone of the Office 365 system, and it can sync with on-premise Active Directory and provide authentication to other cloud-based systems via OAuth.

Azure Active Directory comes in four editions—Free, Office 365 apps, Premium P1, and Premium P2. The Free edition is included with a subscription of a commercial online service, e.g. Azure, Dynamics 365, Intune, and Power Platform. Office 365 subscriptions include the Free edition, but Office 365 E1, E3, E5, F1 and F3 subscriptions also include the features listed under the Office 365 apps column.

Azure AD is the built-in solution for managing identities in Office 365. Add and configure any application with Azure AD to centralize identity and access management and better secure your environment. Configure SSO and automated provisioning depending on your application’s capabilities and your preferences.

Yes. Azure AD supports several standardized protocols for authentication and authorization, including SAML 2.0, OpenID Connect, OAuth 2.0, and WS-Federation.
